Defective Artificial Joints Can Cause Pain and Disability
Hundreds of thousands of U.S. patients have surgery for total hip replacement or total knee replacement every year. High failure rates of certain artificial hip and knee implants have resulted in recalls in recent years, however. If you or a family member has suffered injuries due to complications from defective knee or hip implants, you may be entitled to compensation.
When defective medical devices are released, the products' manufacturers may be liable for injuries and wrongful deaths caused by their negligence. If you received a defective orthopedic implant, you may be experiencing discomfort, pain or other symptoms. Unfortunately, you may need additional surgeries to replace the defective implant. The attorneys at Kenneth R. Schuster & Associates, P.C., work hard to make negligent manufacturers pay for putting profits ahead of patient safety. Recent Hip and Knee Replacement Recalls
DePuy Orthopaedics recalled its ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System in 2010. Problems with DePuy's implants include a shallow artificial cup and metal-on-metal construction of the joint. In addition, Zimmer Durom Cup hip implants and Stryker hip implants have been recalled for high failure rates.
Defective hip implants have caused serious problems for thousands of patients such as:
- Pain and swelling
- Loosening of the implant
- Difficulty sitting, standing and walking
- Fractures and loss of bone
- Metal toxicity (metallosis)
Many patients need revision surgery to replace the defective implant, exposing them to additional pain, disability and surgical risks.
Zimmer NexGen knee replacement implants were recalled in 2010. The FDA recalled the NexGen MIS tibial components used in Zimmer's Flex products. Defects in the knee implants and components have caused pain, implant loosening and the need for additional surgery in many patients.
