History

The community was initially known as Yellow House, in reference to the historic inn and tavern that dated back to 1750 and sits on Glen Mills Road. George Pearce initially owned the house. George Gray, the owner of Gray’s Ferry located on the Schuylkill River, was a prominent client. Gray moved away as the American Revolution began. However, before his move, his family could hear cannons during the Battle of Brandywine, and troops of the Continental Army fled down the road in front of the Yellow House.

Gray’s wife treated the wounded soldiers inside the house.
