Wawa, Pennsylvania: A Look at the Neighborhood

The unincorporated community of Wawa, not to be mistaken for the convenience store, is located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The community is split between Middletown Township and Chester Heights Borough. Although the town borders are unclear, Lenni, Glen Riddle, Chester Heights, Thornton, and Lima all share a common border. Baltimore Pike is the main thoroughfare along with Wawa Road and Red Roof Drive.

History

The area was settled in the 1700s based on its abundance of water. Along the area’s creeks, many mills were established. These varied in type, including gristmills and paper mills. The region was initially called Pennellton or Grubb’s Bridge. However, it was changed to its current name following Edward Worth’s construction of his estate that he named Wawa. The Ojibwe term meaning “wild goose” referenced the many flocks of geese that would visit the water behind Lenni milldam.

Within the community is the historic home, Forge Hill, located just off of US Route 1, or Baltimore Pike. The two and one half story fieldstone house was built between 1798 and 1800. The Wawa Dairy Farm was established in 1890 by George Wood. The New Jersey entrepreneur purchased 1,000 acres and imported dairy cows from the British Crown dependency island of Guernsey. The company’s milk was delivered straight to the customer’s door until stores began to steal his customers.

Wood, along with his grandson, opened a food market in 1964. The stores are now the third-largest retailer for food in the Greater Philadelphia area. The neighborhood is home to Lucky Penny Farm On Wawa Hill. The alpaca farm sits on the historic location once the estate of Grahame Wood, George Wood’s grandson. It sits across from the former owner’s company headquarters. The trail, named for the Jesse and Martha Darlington Estate, runs through mixed woods, meadows, and farmland. A portion runs parallel to Chester Creek and Rocky Run. Demographics

Households within the community are predominantly wealthy and have a higher income than 85.2% of the neighborhoods in America. The neighborhood has a greater proportion of its residents active in the military than most communities in the country. Many of the working population are employed in professions such as: 51.7% executive, management, and professional positions 22.0% manufacturing and laborer occupations 16.4% sales and service jobs 9.9% clerical, assistant, and tech support roles As many as 17.9% of the residents speak Italian, but 98.5% speak English as their primary language.
