Work knee injuries are compensable in Pennsylvania whether from a single twist or fall, or from years of kneeling, squatting and climbing. Meniscus and ligament tears are usually visible on imaging, so the dispute is normally about cause rather than diagnosis.

The two patterns

Acute. A twist on a ladder, a fall from a step, a knee taking the weight during an awkward lift. These produce meniscus tears, ligament injuries and sometimes fractures, and they have a date and often a witness.

Cumulative. Flooring, plumbing, roofing, warehouse work on concrete, anything involving years of kneeling, squatting and stair climbing. These build up, and because there is no incident the notice question becomes the battleground.

Meniscus tears and the degeneration argument

Meniscal tears appear on imaging in people with no symptoms, and insurers use that the same way they use degenerative disc findings. The answer is the same: Pennsylvania compensates aggravation, and the question is when the knee stopped working rather than when the tissue first changed.

Knee replacement

Where a work injury accelerates arthritis to the point of replacement, the claim can include it, and it materially changes valuation. A replacement carries permanent restrictions, a finite prosthesis lifespan and the realistic prospect of revision surgery later in life.

Settling a knee claim before understanding whether a replacement is coming is one of the more expensive mistakes available.

Specific loss

Permanent loss of use of a leg carries a specific loss award separate from wage loss and payable whether or not you returned to work. Worth asking about explicitly in any knee case with lasting limitation.

Questions people ask us about this

Is a meniscus tear from work covered?

Yes, where work caused or aggravated it. Meniscal tears do appear on imaging in people without symptoms, which insurers rely on, but Pennsylvania compensates aggravation. The question is when the knee became disabling, not when the tissue first changed.

My knees wore out over twenty years of kneeling. Is that a claim?

It can be. Cumulative knee injury from kneeling, squatting and stair climbing is compensable, and it is common in flooring, plumbing, roofing and warehouse work. With no accident date the notice clock generally runs from when a doctor linked it to your job.

Will workers comp pay for a knee replacement?

Where a work injury accelerated the arthritis to that point, the claim can include it. That materially changes what the case is worth, because a replacement brings permanent restrictions, a limited prosthesis lifespan and the realistic prospect of revision surgery later.

Can I get an award if my knee never fully recovers?

Possibly, through specific loss for permanent loss of use of the leg. It is separate from wage loss and payable whether or not you went back to work, and it is regularly overlooked in knee claims.
