Aldan

The borough is located within the southeastern region of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It takes up 384 acres, and its only body of water is located within the small portion of Hoffman Park that lies inside the borough's border. The main roadways are West Providence Road and North Woodlawn Avenue that intersect in the town's center.

History

The town of Aldan was officially established in 1893 and is referred to as the Community of Homes, based on 97% of the real estate in the area is residential. The town's name originated from a river in Siberia given to the area by one of the original council member's wives.

The area is home to the Aldan Trolley Stop Museum. The Clifton-Aldan Station, off of West Maryland Avenue, was built in 1880 and designed as a Victorian farmhouse standing two and a half stories high. The Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company converted many of the trolley cars from freight cars to providing garbage removal over the years. However, the SEPTA Route 102 trolley still serves the Media/Elwyn Line and travels from Springfield Road to Woodlawn Avenue.

Neighborhood

The median household income in the community was $47,292 in 2010. With only 3% of the area made up of businesses, the majority of the residents find that they have to commute to work for periods as long as 30 minutes each way. Some take advantage of public transportation, but most find that it is necessary to use their own private vehicle or carpool. The occupational makeup of the working adults in the neighborhood is the following:

• Penn Wood High School - two locations: Green Avenue Campus in Landsdowne and Cypress Street Campus in Yeadon

Demographics

The neighborhood's population was 4,313 and consisted of 1,751 households and 1,157 families. The population has slowly been declining since 1970, and from 2000 to 2010, it decreased by 3.7%. Most of the area's population speak English, but a few families can be heard speaking Italian or Polish. The area has a deep ancestral makeup that includes the following:
