Thomas Leiper

Thomas Leiper, who fought in the American Revolutionary War, was a Scottish American merchant and local politician between the 17th and 18th centuries. During his lifetime, he used a portion of his land to construct a railway through Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

Originally from Strath Haven, Scotland, Leiper emigrated to Maryland in 1763 and soon after to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He started his first business exporting tobacco, which grew quickly after the largely used tobacco house in the region was prohibited from trading prompting the American Revolutionary War. Leiper remained the leading tobacco agent in Philadelphia, which later grew into the United States’ leading distributor.
