History

Built-in 1683, the Caleb Pusey House is the second-oldest English house open to the public in Pennsylvania. The home designed in a vernacular English yeoman’s style is famously known as the last standing house where William Penn is known to have visited.

A plantation named “Landing Ford” is located near Chester Creek around 100 acres of land, given to Pusey by Penn. The building and the grounds have been owned by the Caleb Pusey House Friends, Inc. since the 1950s. The house has been renovated, and the property serves as a museum of historic homes.

Caleb Pusey

Born in Upper Lambourne, Berkshire, England, Caleb spent his youth years in London learning the trade of a “Lastmaker.” After his marriage to Anne Stone Worley, Caleb purchased 250 acres of land from William Penn.

Pusey came to the colony from England in 1682 and became a shareholder and the manager of the proposed mills headed by William Penn.

Shortly after moving to the colony, Pusey began the construction of their one-story home. The home was built in two stages and is believed to have finished each stage a few years apart.

By 1696, the home was fully completed and was occupied by Pusey and his family. The Chester Monhy Meetings and Quaker services were known to have been held at the family home.

The Friends of the Caleb Pusey House, Inc.

The Friends of the Caleb Pusey House Inc. was organized in 1960 to assist in the reconstruction and restoration of the deteriorated home, which was at the point of collapsing. The group received funding from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Commonwealth.

Today, the organization continues to preserve the home that still houses authentically furnished colonial-era pieces and furniture. They also host events and programs of historical interest, open to the public as well as a museum and gift shop for visitors.

My husband and I were in a car accident and our car got t-boned. Andrew Valentin was the lawyer we chose to represent us. Andrew fought on our behalf with the other party's insurance company, making sure everything was made right. Between regular check-ins on us and follow through on the case, Andrew made sure we were well taken care of.
