Trainer

The borough of Trainer is situated in the southern region of Delaware County in the state of Pennsylvania. Stoney Creek passes through the 883.2-acre town and helps to make up the 204.8 acres of water. Other bodies of water within the community include Marcus Hook Creek and the Delaware River. The community's neighbors are Marcus Hook, Twin Oaks, Boothwyn, and Upper Chichester. David was buried at the 36-acre historic Chester Rural Cemetery located in Chester.

History

The borough was named in honor of David Trainer Sr., the owner of the Linwood Mills. David was a prominent resident known as a wealthy textile manufacturer and a banker. Along with his associate, John Haistings, Jr., they converted the Old Price Grist Mill into a cotton factory in 1837.  However, in 1842, the two dissolved their partnership, and David took full ownership of the mill. In 1851 a fire destroyed the mill, and it was rebuilt in 1852.

Historical Landmark

On 9th Street is the United Methodist Church. The church's construction began on October 16, 1927, and finished in April 1928. The Methodist Church was established around 1890, and initial meetings were held in a small chapel that belonged to the Trainer family. As the church's congregation grew, the need for a building became apparent. Two acres were purchased for the site by Rev. Alexander Maconaghy. The building was constructed out of Cynwyd stone, and its beauty awarded it first prize in a church building competition held by the Christian Herald in 1928.

Within the neighborhood is Henry Johnson Park, located on Veterans Drive. The park offers the community many open fields for enjoying nature and outdoor activities. Other amenities available include:

As of 2010, the borough's population was 1,828. This was a decrease of 3.8% from 1,901 in 2000, which made up 712 households and 489 families. The ethnicities within the townspeople included the following:

• 18.9% African American
• 5.5% Hispanic or Latino
• 0.3% Native American
• 0.5% Asian
• 1.7% other races
• 2.2% two or more races

The per capita income in 2018 was $19,032. The median income per household in the borough was $34,250, and for a family, it was $45,625 in 2000. The neighborhood has a mixed workforce of both white and blue-collar occupations, such as:
