History

The town was formed in 2006, as residents desired to better separate themselves from the residents of Upper Chichester Township. At that time, the community was within the ZIP code of 19061, but in 2009, it joined 19060. They were part of the Garnet Valley School District, despite the headquarters being located in Glen Mills.

The community’s name refers to the early garnet mines created in 1879 by Herman Behr & Co. of New York. The mines were in full operation until 1912. Mining began on a farm owned by Charles Williams in the mid-1870s. Williams attracted the attention of a famous mineralogist, “Mineral John” Smedley of Middletown. It was Smedley that persuaded the sandpaper manufacturer Herman Behr & Co. to purchase a 47-acre property in 1879. The main mining pit was 85 feet deep and 200 feet wide. The miners dug into the sand with hand tools and transported it by horse-drawn wagons to Boothwyn. It was shipped from there to the Behr factory. Weather caused the pit to flood in 1900, and the company had a hard time recouping from the damage and eventually shut down in 1912.
