Quaker and land proprietor William Penn bought the land from Chester Creek to the Schuylkill River in 1683. He purchased the tract from the Unami chiefs Icquoquehan and Secane. The Unami was part of the Lenni Lenape or Delaware people. They were matrilocal, meaning they married and then lived within the maternal family’s clan.

The area was mainly farmland before it was developed into a residential community in the 20th century.
