Norwood

The borough of Norwood is located within the southeastern section of Delaware County in Pennsylvania. The town takes up 524.8 acres and includes 256 acres of water, such as Muckinipattis Creek and Darby Creek. Chester Pike travels across the community. Other roadways include Welcome Avenue, Cleveland Avenue, and Seminole Avenue.

History

Within the borough is the historical landmark, the Morton Morton House. This house was built around 1750 and has also been referred to as the Morton Mortonson House and Morton and Lydia Morton House. It is a historic home found off of East Winona Avenue, near the confluence of Muckinipattis Creek and Darby Creek.

The two-story, symmetrical brick house has a gable roof and a one and one half story wing that has a gambrel roof. The inside boasts a Georgian hall-parlor plan. It was restored in 1971 and is open as a historic house operated by the Norwood Historical Society.

Morton Morton was the great-grandson of Marten Martenson. Martenson was an early settler in the New Sweden area that arrived in 1654. Morton was also the first cousin of John Morton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. As one of the founding fathers, John Morton was a farmer and jurist. He gave the swing vote that granted the state to vote in favor of the Declaration of Independence. Additionally, he appointed the committee responsible for writing the Articles of Confederation.

Neighborhood

The community offers its residents many outdoor fields and parks for athletic activities. The Norwood Lower Park, located off of East Winona Ave, has a playground and many sports fields.

Heading north, residents can visit the Norwood Community Garden, located on Harrison Avenue. The park offers its residents a gated playground area with many picnic tables and benches for relaxing.

Education

The Interboro School District provides public education within the borough. The district has six schools total. Some zoned for the area include:

• Norwood Elementary School - grades 1-8 - 539 students - located on Seneca Avenue
• Interboro Senior High School - grades 9-12 - 1,086 students - located on 16th and Amosland Road

Demographics

In 2010 the community was home to 5,890 residents. This was a decrease of 1.6% from 2000. The racial composition of the residents included the following:

• 1.4% Hispanic or Latino

The median income per household within the borough was $47,043. The median income for a family household was $54,983. Men had a median income of $41,667, while women averaged $28,315 per year.
