Sycamore Mills

The neighborhood of Sycamore Mills is located in the Upper Providence Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Lima, Media, Elwyn, Edgmont, and Newtown Square are some of the closest neighborhoods. The community sits on the edge of Ridley Creek State Park. Ridley Creek and Dismal Run flow through the community.

History

Initial settlers in the area were English Quakers who cultivated the land until the twentieth century. One of the oldest properties includes the Worrel House, built in 1683.

The community has a vast history of mills due to the creeks that offered water power. Providence Mill was established and used to grind corn in 1718. A plaster mill was constructed near a grist mill toward the end of the 18th century. This mill was later replaced with a rolling and slitting mill that was known as Bishop’s Mills in 1812. Many cottages were built in the area to provide residence for the mill workers. A dam and several outbuildings were also located on the mill complex known as Sycamore Mills. Many of the mills continued to operate until a fire destroyed them in 1901. The primary mills in the greater area included:

  • Sycamore Mills or Bishop’s Mills (1718)
  • Robinett Grist Mill (1687)
  • Malin’s Grist Mill (1770)
  • Register’s Nail Factory (1812)
  • Palmer’s Mills (1802)

Historical Landmarks

Within the community is Ridley Creek State Park. It is home to the historic Hunting Hill Mansion, built in 1915. The mansion was built around a farmhouse that dated back to 1773. It was an English Tudor stone building with ornamental plasterwork on the ceilings, and many of the arches had Tudor rose carvings.

The landscape was designed in 1924 by the same company that created Central Park. The property has the following features:

  • a greenhouse
  • a pool
  • a fountain
  • a croquet field and a tennis court

More recently, in 2016, Peachtree Catering began managing events on the property. Residents can rent the historic venue and hold events such as weddings on the lush grounds. Catering and bar services are offered by the company, in addition to party planning.

Another great place to visit is the Alpenhof Bed & Breakfast. This old renovated stone barn has seven rooms to choose from. Breakfast is served in a community setting in a relaxing vintage decorated dining room. The house overlooks a grand garden where visitors can watch the butterflies.
