History

In 1854 the area became the home of The Pennsylvania Training School for Feeble-minded Children. The facility was founded by a physician, Dr. Alfred L. Elwyn, and teacher James B. Richards. Dr. Alfred L. Elwyn also founded the Pennsylvania Institution for the Blind just twelve years earlier. Although he obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from Harvard, he never practiced medicine. Instead, he became a philanthropist and author.

After witnessing Richard’s work in a classroom setting in the South Boston Institute for the Blind, he proposed to build a similar facility in Pennsylvania. With the help of Richards, Elwyn’s first training school was located in Germantown, but as they outgrew it, they moved to the area. The school was officially opened in 1859, with 25 students living on the campus. By 1870 the community took on the name of Elwyn.

The Bruce Wechsler Hall was named after a resident whose parents donated $1 million for the construction. The assisted living facility will house as many as 36 men or women that have a more severe case of cognitive, mobility, or medical challenges. The state-of-the-art residence was built with sustainability in mind. The idea was to avoid sending people with mental disabilities into nursing homes that are not equipped to meet their needs.
