Thornton

The unincorporated community of Thornton is situated in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Some of the closest towns include Glen Mills, Chester Heights, Wawa, and Lima.

History

The community was initially known as Yellow House, in reference to the historic inn and tavern that dated back to 1750 and sits on Glen Mills Road. George Pearce initially owned the house. George Gray, the owner of Gray’s Ferry located on the Schuylkill River, was a prominent client. Gray moved away as the American Revolution began. However, before his move, his family could hear cannons during the Battle of Brandywine, and troops of the Continental Army fled down the road in front of the Yellow House. Gray’s wife treated the wounded soldiers inside the house.

Other historical events that took place in the house included:

  • 1800 – Thomas Charlton set up a handloom making linen
  • 1829 – John King established the Thornton Post Office in the Yellow
  • 1845, d by William D. Pennell purchased the house at a bankruptcy auction

Historical Landmarks

Within the community is the Thornton Village Historic District, located at the intersection of Thornton Road and Glen Mills Road. Many of the 13 buildings within the district were constructed between 1750 and 1855. Some of these include:

  • 1790 – Caleb Hoopes House
  • 1805 – Blacksmith House
  • 1851 – Beebe House
  • 1850 – William D. Pennell House

The Glen Mills Train Station, located on Glen Mills Road, is a historical railroad station that began in 1858 as a stop for the West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad. The current station replaced the original in 1882 and was designed by Frank Furness, a Victorian-era American architect. It now serves as a quant layover site that allows waiting guests to tour the station and picnic grove.
