Wallingford

The unincorporated community of Wallingford is located in the Nether Providence Township within Delaware County in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania. The elevation for the town is 131 feet. The neighboring communities are Swarthmore, Crum Creek Manor, Sackville, Rose Valley, Milmont Park, and Morton. The main roadways that travel through the town are West Rose Valley Road, East Brookhaven Road, Chester Road, and the Mid County Expressway.

History

The town was founded in 1687 and named after the town in England. It was originally part of the land granted to William Penn, the historical author known for his Quaker influence in the area. A farmer friend of Penn’s acquired 78 acres, and the town’s first school was started upon it in 1810. In 1856 the Nether Providence School District was established.

Historical Landmarks

The area is home to many historical points of interest, including the Thomas Leiper Estate built in 1785. The estate is also known as Avondale and is located on Avondale Road. Leiper built the estate and named it after his hometown in Scotland, Strath Haven. The Strath Haven Middle and High Schools are named after the historic mansion.  A stuccoed yellow mansion sits on the property, and guided tours are offered by the Friends of the Leiper House. Other structures found on the estate include:

  • barn
  • carriage house
  • smokehouse
  • warehouse
  • tenant’s house
  • quarry

Another historical landmark within the community is the 2,078-seat Community Arts Center. The performing arts center was constructed in 1928 and was originally owned by the wealthy mill owner, Mordecai Lewis. The property was sold multiple times before landing in the hands of Ida E. Dixon and Henry P. Dixon in 1875. The stone water tower was constructed in 1889 and is a historical landmark to this day. Weddings and other special occasions have been performed on the four-acre property in front of the architectural gem.

Neighborhood

The community was voted 7th for the best place to live in the country by Money Magazine in 2007. Within the community, the residents will find the following amenities:

There are several places of worship for the community to attend services, including:

  • Wallingford Presbyterian Church

The area’s population was 11,420 in 2010, and the density was 3,095 residents per square mile. This population consisted of 4,487 housing units.
