The borough of Brookhaven is situated in the southern region of Delaware County in the state of Pennsylvania. The borough covers 1,094.4 acres and has an elevation of 98 feet. Early History

19th Century

By the late 19th century, most of the farms were owned by John Price Crozer, from which the Crozer-Chester Medical Center was named. Crozer did more than own the thriving large stock farms; he also bred prize bulls and racehorses. However, soon after he died, his land was sold to developers, ending the reign of farmland in the community.

At the time the borough was incorporated in 1945, the area was home to 150 homes containing 672 residents. This was just the beginning, and over a span of the following fifty years, the community grew to 3,600 homes, condos, and apartments with a population of almost 8,000.

History

The area is home to the historical Todmorden Mansion that was built in 1787 by Jacob Benninghove, a tobacconist from Philadelphia. Benninghove purchased the land after it was confiscated from the British loyalist Vernon family. He proceeded to construct a dam on Ridley Creek in order to water-powered his snuff mill. The mill, now referred to as Old Mill, is currently being used as the town hall.

In 1831, Samuel Bancroft bought the house and gave it the name Todmorden. In 1842, Bancroft lost the house to bankruptcy but was able to repurchase it in 1854, where he lived until 1889 and restarted his business, John Bancroft & Son. The mill was one of the largest woolen mills during the 1870s. Bancroft constructed tunnels and secret chambers throughout the house and property that were used during the Underground Railroad.

History

The area was the dwelling spot for the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe. They used the Great Minquas Path as a major trade route through the area. The structure sits on a 1.6-acre property next to a historical Great Minquas Path section.

History

The Lenape Native American Indians resided in the area prior to the European settlers that came around 1640. The area hosted a major settlement of the Natives, and as the Dutch began to settle, they established a trading post. The name of the borough came from a corrupted version of the Indian chief's name, Maarte, added to the hook, which stood for the section of land projecting out into the water.

The Dutch did not retain control for long before the English took over in 1699. The town was prosperous but was plagued with pirates coming off the Delaware River. The pirates would sell their stolen items and buy supplies while avoiding the Philadelphia officials.

Folsom

Folsom is a census-designated place or CDP that is situated in the southeastern section of Delaware County in Pennsylvania. Along with several other communities, it helps to form Ridley Township. History

In 1644 the area became the home of many Swedish Immigrants. This was following the exploration of Henry Hudson in 1609. The Dutch followed the Swedish into the area in 1655.

The town was named after Frances Folsom, the wife of the President of the United States, Grover Cleveland. In 1886 the area began to sell lots for development. The Folsom Land Company, headed by the prominent landowner, Thomas T. Tasker, and lawyer William Henry Sutton. However, the company went out of business in 1894.

The Folsom Fire Co. No. 1 was founded by several members and originally gathered in a small office building of the Folsom Land Company. In 1909 they purchased land at Sutton Avenue and 4th. The firefighters at the time built the brick building. They were the first in the area to have a motorized vehicle that they purchased for only $30 from the Berwyn Fire Company. A second story was added to the firehouse in 1912. A new building was constructed in 1962 at the corner of MacDade Boulevard and Morton Avenue. The fire department resided in this building until the most recent construction of their current building was completed in 2005, costing over one million dollars.

On April 16, 1964, the first Wawa opened at the inspection of Swarthmore Avenue and MacDade Boulevard. The company originated as an iron foundry in 1803. Its main headquarters is located in the town of Chester Heights. This American chain of convenience stores was the largest in the state in 2008 and has expanded into the following states:

Morton

Morton is a borough situated in the eastern section of Delaware County in the state of Pennsylvania. Springfield Township is across its north, east, and western boundaries. The Ridley Township communities Rutledge and Wyndom are to the south of the town. South Morton Avenue travels through the town along with Kendron Avenue, or Pennsylvania Route 420. The 230.4-acre neighborhood is 3.9 miles to the east of Media.

History

The borough was named after John Morton's son, Sketchley Morton. John Morton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was born in Ridley Township in 1725. His father was born in Finland and came to America during the Swedish colonization in 1654. His father died before he was born, and his mother remarried John Sketchley when he was eight. He named his son after his step-father, and in 1776, the town became part of the Ridley and Springfield Townships.

Historical Landmarks

In 1880, Joseph Wilson built the Morton Train Station that is currently used on the SEPTA Regional Rail Media/Elwyn Line. Wilson was part of the Wilson Brothers architectural firm, Victorian-era architecture and engineering firm that was founded in Philadelphia. The brothers were well known for their works on bridges, churches, railroad stations, and so much more. The train stop served the Pennsylvania Railroad West Chester line.

In 1947, the area was home to the Piasecki Helicopter Corporation. The helicopter manufacturer and designing company was founded by Frank Piasecki, who later formed Piasecki Aircraft. The company constructed Piasecki H-21 and the Piasecki HUP-1 at the factory. Boeing incorporated the company in 1854 before it moved out of the town. The original building currently serves as the location for BJ's Wholesale, and the original control tower still stands in one corner.

Located on Broad Street is the First Baptist Church of Morton, established over 132 years ago. The original wooden church was constructed in 1908, and later the stone structure was added. Women would carry the bricks to the construction site in their aprons. It was founded by Germantown residents that would first be gathered in a home of one of the members. The church's first organist, Theresa Jordan, purchased the congregation's first organ from her own money.

History

Both the Continental and the British armies marched through the town. Even General George Washington came through the town with his soldiers on his way to battle General Howe in Wilmington, Delaware. Howe was a Commander-in-Chief of British land forces in the Colonies during the war. Following the Battle of Brandywine, General George Washington stayed with John McIlvain, a sawmill owner, in Crum Creek. The house is said to still stand to this day. The troops camped along the road during this time.

Secane

Secane is an unincorporated community located in both the Township of Ridley and Upper Darby Township. The town is situated in the southeastern section of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. History

Before William Penn purchased the land in 1683, the area was inhabited by the Algonquin-speaking North American Indian tribe. The Unami chiefs Icquoquehan and Secane, how the town was named, were the leaders of the area. The tribes were mainly hunters and fishermen, but they also grew corn, beans, and squash. They were battling the Iroquois Confederacy at the time the Europeans settled into the region.

During the Revolutionary War, the community served as a pathway for the Continental and British Armies. General George Washington led his soldiers through on his journey to Wilmington.

Upper Providence

The township of Upper Providence is located on the western edge of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. After a petition started by the residents in 1725, the area was renamed Providence and included both the upper and lower regions. IT was not until 1805 that the area was divided along the Perkiomen Creek, establishing the upper township. The boroughs of Trappe and Collegeville were created in 1896, leaving the current boundaries of the township.

The Schuylkill Canal played a vital role in the growth of the area. In 1846 the Schuylkill Canal’s Lock Number 60 was constructed. This allowed the boats to cross the river as it connected the canal to the forebay by maintaining the correct level of water flow. A recent restoration took place in 1995 and was completed in 2005 that included improvements to the guard wall, miter gates, and truss bridge.

The borough of Ridley Park is situated in the southern region of Delaware County in the state of Pennslyvania. History

This began the major growth spurt for the community with the inclusion of a hotel and a dam on Crum Creek that formed a 20-acre lake. Crum Lynne

Crum Lynne is an unincorporated community situated within the southeastern section of Pennsylvania, in Delaware County. History

The town was originally known as Leiperville, named after prominent landowner Thomas Leiper. Leiper was born in Scotland in 1745 and immigrated to America in 1763 to join his brother. After being introduced to the tobacco industry, he opened his own shop. He became the major provider in the state during the Revolutionary War. He purchased land in the present-day Crum Creek in 1776. The land included a waterfall and a mill that Leiper turned into a snuff mill before purchasing a stone quarry. Leiper's businesses were quite successful, and he purchased 728 acres within the area.

Leiperville was renamed Crum Lynne in 1870, after the lake with the waterfall, Crum Lake. However, the lake would later become known as Ridley Lake.

In 1906, James F. Dougherty opened the Colonial Hotel on Chester Pike. Dougherty had an extensive history in sports but mainly had a love for boxing. Within the hotel, many well-known boxers would train. He was known as the Baron of Leiperville for his boxing influence in the community. Dougherty also contributed to the formation of the first fire department in 1908, the James F. Dougherty Fire Company.

Diverse Heritage

The area has a large population of Polish, Romanian and Greek residents that keep the Ukrainian heritage strong. The Ukrainian Baptist Church, established in 1910, offers the community sermons in both Ukrainian and Russian, in addition to their live English translation.

The borough, Clifton Heights, is located in the eastern section of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The county is situated on the southeastern edge of the state. When the Quakers settled into the area, they were peaceful for the most part. Even William Penn stated they "tread softly and mostly walk with a lofty chin," as he described them. However, in 1755 the Native Americans retaliated against the European settlers in an attempt to take back land that they were forced from.

The area had advantage points of the heights, also referred to at the time as Tin Kettle Hill. This area located between Baltimore Avenue and Springfield Road offered the residents a wide view. If they saw the Native Americans approaching, they would alert the townspeople by banging on a large kettle. Several legends surround this theory of the townspeople being warned of incoming attacks from during the Revolutionary War.

Neighborhood

The area is home to the first Italian Ice company in the United States, the Rosati Ice. The company was founded by Sam Rosati in 1912 and is located on East Madison Avenue. The Italian Ice company has worked with local schools to offer their sweet treat to the children. They have also created the American Hero Ice, a strawberry lemonade flavor, giving a portion of the sales to SoldierStrong.org.

Just down the road, on South Springfield Road, is Gaetoano's Pizzeria. The small local pizza restaurant was established in 1988 by Joseph Gubitosi. Visitors from all over come to enjoy the Delco pizza favorites.

In 1872 Hinckley's dream to build a railroad suburb came true as the first passenger cars began to stop in the area. The railroad brought growth to the city, and soon a hotel was built. Even today, 6.9% of the current working residents take the train to and from work.

When the Very Reverand John Ciurpita heard the historic Leiper Presbyterian Church was having financial struggles in 2012, he teamed up with the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and purchased the site for $525,000. The Ukrainian Catholic parishes were looking for a more centralized location that could accommodate the neighboring families that were part of the congregation. The purchase was made on May 8, 2014, and after some renovations, the dedication was held in April of 2015 creating the Holy Myrrh-Bearers (Ukrainian) Eastern Catholic Church. The church will serve not only the local Ukrainian Catholics but two neighboring counties and as many as three states.

Developers designed ranch-style houses along with tracts of row houses to accommodate the growing population. The neighborhood saw an increase of 62.7% from 1940 to 1950, followed by an increase of 68.2% from 1950 to 1960.

Elwyn

History

In 1854 the area became the home of The Pennsylvania Training School for Feeble-minded Children. The facility was founded by a physician, Dr. Alfred L. Elwyn, and teacher James B. Richards. Dr. Alfred L. Elwyn also founded the Pennsylvania Institution for the Blind just twelve years earlier. Although he obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and graduated from Harvard, he never practiced medicine. Instead, he became a philanthropist and author.

After witnessing Richard's work in a classroom setting in the South Boston Institute for the Blind, he proposed to build a similar facility in Pennsylvania. With the help of Richards, Elwyn's first training school was located in Germantown, but as they outgrew it, they moved to the area. The school was officially opened in 1859, with 25 students living on the campus. By 1870 the community took on the name of Elwyn.

The Bruce Wechsler Hall was named after a resident whose parents donated $1 million for the construction. The assisted living facility will house as many as 36 men or women that have a more severe case of cognitive, mobility, or medical challenges. The state-of-the-art residence was built with sustainability in mind. The idea was to avoid sending people with mental disabilities into nursing homes that are not equipped to meet their needs.

The borough is located in the southern region of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. History

The area was home to the Lenni - Lenape Native American tribe prior to being settled by the Dutch. The first European to settle in the area in 1609 was Henry Hudson. The Swedes and the English would follow him. Under the ruling of King Charles II of England, William Penn, a follower of the Quaker religion and a well-known English author, was granted the land that would become Pennsylvania. Penn divided the area up into three counties:

Philadelphia County was the first to be developed due to the proximity of the river. Chester County was further divided and renamed Delaware County in 1789 after the river. Delaware County has become the fifth most populous in the state and the third smallest. The county consists of 49 municipalities, including 27 boroughs.

Moylan

The unincorporated community is located within the Nether Providence Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Ridley Creek creates the western border of the neighborhood, and Rose Valley Road forms its southern border.

Early History

During the 17th century, the area was home to the Great Minquas Path or trade route taken by the Minquas or Susquehannock Native American Indian tribes. The Dutch initially began the fur trade with the native in the 1620s. The Dutch named the route after the tribe and battled the Swedes and English to retain its control. The path runs east and west for approximately 80 miles through the following counties:

In 1664 the English took control of the path. William Penn, an English writer and Quaker, was granted land in the area in 1681. Possibly due to the influx of European settlers, the natives were nearly wiped out by a case of Small Pox. Later in 1763, the Paxton Boys would eliminate the few that remained. The trail helped to form the present-day Chester and Lancaster Counties.

Railroad Station

Located off of Manchester Road is the Moylan-Rose Valley Station. The station was first opened in 1870. The station is a SEPTA Regional Rail station and still provides service to the Media/Elwyn Line. The station also is home to the Moylan post office.

Neighborhood

The homes in the area cost on average $503,419 and primarily consist of single-family homes with three to four bedrooms. Many were built prior to 1969, giving it a more historic charm. Nether Providence Township is located in central Delaware County and has a population of around 13,000 based on the census of 2010. The surrounding municipalities are Upper Providence, Springfield Township, Swarthmore, Ridley Township, Cheser, Brookhaven, and Rose Valley.

Early History

Native Americans of the Lenape tribe were the first documented residents of Nether Providence Township. They lived in the area for about 500 years, but by 1740, only a few remained. Two months before William Penn's arrival, John Sharpless stumbled upon the area and settled near Ridley Creek.

There were many small towns in the area before Penn arrived, which became known as Providence Township. Today's Nether Providence, Rose Valley, Media, and Upper Providence were all part of Providence Township.

Throughout the decades, Nether Providence had four stages of growth, from farming to industrialization, a resort, and lastly, a residential area. By 1729, the region had produced enough crops to be able to sell to New England, Canada, and Europe.

Leiper Railroad, the first railway in the Township, was constructed in 1809 and ran until 1828. Later, the first independent trolley began running in 1892 and was used through 1938.

Education System

The first school opened in 1810 has since grown throughout the community. Nether Providence Township is a part of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District and offers public schools for children. Public schools are Providence Elementary School, Swarthmore-Rutledge Elementary School, Wallingford Elementary School, Strath Haven Middle School, and Strath Haven High School.

Within the park, you'll find Old Tree Tavern, a historic inn, and tavern built in 1809. Since then, its undergone some frame structure renovations and was also moved about 100 yards from the original site due to road construction. The last renovation was done in 2011 and is now houses the Brandwine Conference and Visitors Bureau.

The tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

History

Early settlers can be dated back to arriving on the land during the 16th century from New Sweden, similar to its neighboring boroughs of Eddystone and Feltonville. The land was originally a huge part of the agricultural demand used as producing farmlands but later became a suburban residential area of Philadlephia upon the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

After the railroad construction in 1874, a borough stop was created and named Folcroft, which translates to "leafy fields." The borough that originally belonged to Darby Township was later incorporated in 1922.

Environmental Progress

In 1972, the Tinicum Marsh that runs along the Darby Creek because a National Wildlife Refuge with help from local citizens, politicians, businesses, and organizations. Renamed The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, the Refuge is just one of over 530 national wildlife refuges operated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

The biological refuge is modest in size, with just 1,200 acres of marshes, plains, lakes, and woodland. Along the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean, Tinicum's Marshes and other wetlands in the Delaware waterway serve as a habitat for commercial and sport fishing.

Historical Landmarks

The Feltonville School No. 2, also known as the Feltonville School, is a landmark school building in Philadelphia's Feltonville neighborhood. It was completed in 1908 and was designed by architect Henry deCourcy Richards.

The two-story Late Gothic Revival-style brick building continues to stand tall and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

History

Before Upper Darby had been inhabited by settlers, it belonged to the Native American Lenape tribe for thousands of years. With a group from New Sweden, the first permanent European settlers came in late 1653. Shortly after, in 1655, the Dutch seized control of New Sweden, which was then annexed by England in October 1664 as part of England's larger invasion of New Amsterdam. The area remained under the English monarchy rule until 1681 when it was granted to William Penn.

The district was designated as part of the municipality of Darby Township, in Chester County, upon Penn's establishment of the colony of Pennsylvania the following year. On September 26, 1789, it became part of the eastern portion of that county, which was broken apart to become Delaware County.

Upper Darby was instrumental in the antislavery movement, reflecting the Quaker tradition of its early English settlers. Prior to 1830, at least one abolition society existed, and it sent a delegation of twelve notable men to the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society's conference in Philadelphia in 1830.

Many homes in the neighborhood were Underground Railroad stations, including Hoodland, the home of abolitionist Thomas Pennock, which was later donated to the township's public library and still contains the children's library, which is attached to a much larger new facility that contains the Main Branch.

The borough of Eddystone is located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with a small population of around 2,400, as stated in the 2010 census. History

The land where Eddystone sits was once called "Tequirassy" by the Native Americans that resided near the vicinity of Ridley Creek. In 1641, the Eddystone was owned by Olof Persson Stille, a New Sweden settler who immigrated to the land, who later became a judge on the first courthouse located on the Delaware River banks.

Eddystone took a bit longer to become incorporated due to having to file a petition that posed a challenge for the borough because of financial issues involving the township. After a challenging court case, the borough was successfully incorporated in December of 1888.

Eddystone was named after William Simpson, who was so taken with the Eddystone Lighthouse on a visit to England that he named the town after it.

Education

Ridley School District has two schools, the Eddystone Elementary School and Ridley Middle School. Eddystone Elementary School stands where the old Eddystone High School used to be, which unfortunately burned down in 1960.

In June 2006, Media became the first town in the United States to receive fair trade certification, joining over 300 towns in Europe.

Built in 1724, the Courthouse remains a historic landmark and is known as the oldest public building that still stands in the United States.

The Historical Chester Courthouse in Pennsylvania

1724 Chester Courthouse

Built in 1724, the Chester Courthouse remains one of the three counties in the Province of Pennsylvania created by William Penn and is considered the oldest public building that still stands in the United States. The Courthouse was the fourth built in Chester and served as the Delaware County courthouse in 1789. In 1850, the Delaware County seat was then moved to its new home in Media, PA, and the Chester Courthouse became the City Hall for Chester.

For decades, the Courthouse was used by the Delaware County Historical Society up until 1966, when the building deteriorations became detrimental to the members of the society, compelling them to move. Over the course of its years, the courtroom maintained its title as the oldest active court and was constantly in use at least once annually until 1967.

Today, a special ceremony is held in May annually in the Chester Courthouse to celebrate Law Day. Students in Chester are able to reenact a mock trial to commemorate the importance the courthouse held to Chester and as one of the oldest legal institutions.

Structure Of The Courthouse

The 2 and 1/2 story high German Colonial-style courthouse was made out of 2-foot thick walls, carved and rubble stone, and glass windows. A stone-floored courtroom separated by a low wooden railing is on the first level, built to isolate judges and lawyers from court attendees. There are no fireplaces on the first floor, but both the jury room and the smaller jury room on the second floor have fireplaces.

Chester

Originally named "Upland" by the Swedish settlers in 1644, decades later, the name was changed to Chester in 1682. William Penn obtained the colonial settlement in 1861 as a refuge for Quakers, and soon after, he changed the name to Chester, after a city located in England.

Chester was a successful and affluent industrial town for the first two hundred years of its existence, with factories focused on construction, metal manufacturing, railroads, shipbuilding, and goods and services. Combined with the town's accessibility to the Delaware River and major lines, these powerful factories created employment and fuelled a steady growth in population.

A rapid expansion of people grew in the early 1900s, caused by World War I, with tons of jobs created in the city from the war. A demand for housing and other services had also been generated by the number of jobs created. Shortly after, economic growth balanced out after the depression period. During this time, manufacturing employment fell dramatically in Chester, along with the rest of the county.

By the 1950s, the population in Chester peaked again with over 66,000 residents; simultaneously, the post-war economy hit the economic industry, prompting workers to move out of the city to other surrounding towns with more job security. Today, Chester attracts a number of new businesses, generates tons of job opportunities, and is home to five nationally registered historic places. This little town has grown significantly over the hundreds of years and will continue to thrive with either close-knit community and economic developments.

About The Church

The US Civil War created a vast diversity of goods and services and symbolic architectural work such as the Old Third Presbyterian Church. Through the work of architects Isaac Pursell and possibly assistance from Theophilus Chandler, the iconic 1894 Bethlehem Presbyterian Church with its gorgeous eight-sided vaulted roof was established.

The interior of the Church showcases many historic details inspired by different countries over the world. Natural lighting was installed using an intricate glass great eye-window version of the Roman Pantheon. On each side of the hall, classrooms were built with ventilated windows, light installations, and a clear view of the Rotunda.

Thomas Leiper

Thomas Leiper, who fought in the American Revolutionary War, was a Scottish American merchant and local politician between the 17th and 18th centuries. During his lifetime, he used a portion of his land to construct a railway through Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

Originally from Strath Haven, Scotland, Leiper emigrated to Maryland in 1763 and soon after to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He started his first business exporting tobacco, which grew quickly after the largely used tobacco house in the region was prohibited from trading prompting the American Revolutionary War. Leiper remained the leading tobacco agent in Philadelphia, which later grew into the United States' leading distributor.

Located in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, the historic Thomas Leiper Estate, also recognized as Avondale, stands tall. Constructed in 1785, it was named after Leiper's birthplace in Leiper, Strath Haven, Scotland.

During the Arts & Crafts Movement in the 1800s, Will Price became a leading figure in the social movement. In Overbrook, PA, their home became the hub where groups would gather to discuss economics, social justice, and art.

Will Price bought eighty acres of land around what had been Rose Valley Mills in 1901 and then started to plan and create a modern city based on the Arts and Crafts movement principles. Based on those principles, Rose Valley was modeled after a utopian English village nicknamed "News from Nowhere."

Thunderbird Lodge

Thunderbird Lodge brings historical and architectural significance to Rose Valley and is the location that holds the museum's collection. Originally built in the late 1700s, Will Price renovated it and turned it into a studio for artists Charles H. and Alice Barber Stephens.

Near the border of the Delaware River and Chester Creek, the William Penn Landing Site marks the site of one of Pennsylvania's earliest monumental events. Etched on a small granite plaque, you'll find information on the first disembarkment of the founder William Penn.

History Of The Landmark

The William Penn Landing Site monument in Chester, Pennsylvania, marks the site of William Penn's first landing on the territory of Pennsylvania in October 1682.

From surviving a horrific smallpox epidemic on Penn's ship to the discussion of territory boundaries with Maryland, Penn finally landed in the small town then known as Upland, which he quickly renamed to Chester after the name was proposed by a local resident of the town. Shortly after, he founded Philadlephia, the neighboring town to Chester, PA.

The Monument

The granite statue stands over five feet tall and the side facing inland has Penn's coat of arms. To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the landing, members of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Penn Club paid for the memorial. At the time of the celebration, a train was run from Philadelphia through Chester as a dedication for the memorial.

Interestingly enough, the actual location where Penn landed remains unclear. the landing site was presumed to be the beginning of Chester Creek, just a block shy from the park where to monument stands.

Since the historical landmark is located in a public park, guests are permitted to visit the monument any time of day.

Temple's symbol (and mascot) is the owl,  a 'mascot' that has been with the school since the very beginning. The first students of the school, before it was an established university, were taking classes at night, essentially making them "night owls." The Philly School District proudly sits at number 8 on the list of the largest school districts in the entire United States. It's composed of over 19,000 employees who proudly serve more than 200,000 students attending 214 schools. Of these, 149 are elementary, 16 are junior high, and 49 are high schools. The entire city of Philly possesses 300 schools, though the remaining 86 are independently-operated charter schools, though they remain accountable to the School District of Philadelphia.

Previous to the year 2001, the city of Philadelphia itself was in charge of the school district. For decades, funding for each school was determined by property taxes of surrounding properties. Naturally, more affluent areas paid higher property taxes which ultimately led the local schools to flourish. On the other hand, the lower-income areas of the city saw the quality of education decline aggressively. This disparage in funding across schools within the same school district, along with many other issues, led then Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary Charles Zogby to sign a "Declaration of Distress."

The momentous signing handed over control of the school district from the city of Philadelphia itself to the State of Pennsylvania. The hand-off was not an easy one, and many private companies were positioned to profit. Unfortunately, as recently as 2007, the desired improvements in quality of education throughout schools were not particularly observed, though it does not appear to have gotten worse, if that can be considered a positive.

History

The location of the ArboretumArboretum was part of a land grant sold by William Penn in 1682 to John Sharpless. From 1740 until 1882, the grounds were part of an industrial mill complex that manufactured, among other things, lumber, grain, and textiles.

The source of power that drove the local mills was Ridley Creek that conveniently bordered the property. 

Arboretum

Established in 1931 by Chester lawyer Joshua C. Taylor, the Taylor Arboretum at Widener University was created in memory of his late wife, Anne Rulon Gray. 

Taylor dedicated the Arboretum to promote the "health, enjoyment, and education of the public in perpetuity." There were hopes of expanding the development of the site, but after the Great Depression and the loss of his wife, Taylor decided not to proceed any further. 

Joshua Taylor created the Taylor Foundation to ensure his conservation efforts would continue. In 1952, public visitation and ground development began. Widener University bought the Arboretum in 2016, and it currently manages the property.

Visitor Information

Guests can visit the Arboretum at no charge, year-round. The trails, meadows, and forest areas offer access to an abundance of trees, shrubs, grasses, ferns, and more beautiful species. The Arboretum is continually evolving with the seasons; everywhere you look, there's something different to discover.
